Every January the same question circulates in the same form: which Canary island is warmest? It is a reasonable question with an unhelpful answer, because the islands sit in the same patch of Atlantic at the same latitude and the sea holds them all at roughly the same temperature. Rank them by average maximum and the gap between first and last is 1.1 °C, which is less than the difference between the sunny and the shaded side of a hotel terrace.
So this guide ranks them on the columns that do move: how much sun the station records, how many days it rains, and how high above the sea you are standing. Every figure below comes from AEMET, Spain’s state meteorological agency, with the station and its altitude named, because on these islands the station is most of the story.
If the week has to deliver sun, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the strongest picks in the published record: 203 and 190 January sunshine hours against 16 and 14 mm of rain, on low, flat islands with no mountain to hold cloud. The south of Tenerife is the warmest single point in the comparison at 21.7 °C and nearly as dry, and it buys an escape route upwards on a bad day. La Palma and the north of Tenerife are green for a reason and should be chosen deliberately: La Palma airport records 141 January sunshine hours, the lowest here, and Tenerife’s northern airport records 80 mm of rain across 7.7 days, nearly five times the southern figure on the same island. None of that is a warning. It is a description of two different holidays sold under one name.
The islands are the same temperature
Take the four airports most British flights land at. Their January mean daily maximums are 21.7 °C at Tenerife Sur, 20.8 °C at Gran Canaria, 20.7 °C at Lanzarote and 20.6 °C at Fuerteventura. The mean daily minimums run 15.2, 15.0, 14.0 and 14.7 °C. Whatever else is true about a January week on these islands, it will not be decided by which of those four numbers you booked.
That parity is the useful finding, because it clears the table. Once temperature is out of the argument, the remaining published columns start doing real work, and they disagree with each other in ways the brochures never mention.
What AEMET publishes
Below are January normals for eight AEMET stations, with altitude given because it changes the answer more than longitude does. All use the 1981–2010 reference period, so they are internally comparable, which is rarer than it sounds when comparing across countries.

Read the temperature column and six of the eight stations look interchangeable. Read the sunshine column and the same six spread from 141 to 203 hours, a difference of about two hours of sun a day across the month. Read the rain-days column and they spread from 1.8 to 7.7. The islands are not competing on warmth. They are competing on how often the sky is clear, and on that measure they are nowhere near each other.
The coast is the variable
The clearest evidence that the island is the wrong unit of comparison sits inside a single island. Tenerife’s southern airport records 17 mm of January rain across 1.8 days with 193 hours of sun. Its northern airport, 632 metres up on the other side of the same mountain, records 80 mm across 7.7 days with 150 hours. Santa Cruz, on the eastern shore at 36 metres, sits between them at 32 mm and 178 hours. Three stations, one island, a rainfall range of nearly five to one.
The mechanism is not complicated. The prevailing north-easterly flow arrives moist, meets high ground on the northern flanks and leaves its water there. Everything downwind sits in the rain shadow. That is why the resorts grew where they did, and it is why La Palma, which is steep, high and green, posts the lowest sunshine figure in the table while sharing a mean maximum with Fuerteventura. La Palma is not a worse island. It is a wetter one, which is exactly why it looks the way it does.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have the opposite geography: low and flat, with little to force air upwards. Their reward is the sunshine column. Their cost is landscape rather than weather, and a week there is spent driving, walking and looking at volcanic ground rather than sitting under a pine.
The other island, 2,369 metres up
The most interesting row in the table is the one nobody books. Izaña, the observatory on Tenerife at 2,369 metres, records a January mean daily maximum of 7.5 °C and a mean minimum of 1.1 °C. It also records 226 hours of January sunshine, more than any coastal station here, because it sits above the cloud layer the coast is arguing about.
The practical version: on Tenerife a January day can hold a 21 °C beach and a sub-zero night at altitude, and the upper slopes are the sunniest part of the island while the north sits under the cloud that produced its 80 mm. This is a feature of the trip rather than a curiosity. It means a Tenerife week has a fallback that a flat island does not, because when the coast is grey, going up often works. It also means the packing list needs a proper layer, which is the thing people flying to a winter-sun island leave at home.
The booking that is not the flight
If the mountain is part of the plan, the last 200 metres of it are a separate reservation, and the rules changed recently enough that plenty of published advice is now wrong. Access to the summit of Teide runs along the Telesforo Bravo trail, path 10 in the national park’s numbering: 0.69 km long, from 3,555 m at the top cable-car station to 3,715 m, about 45 minutes, graded high difficulty with gradients reaching 60 per cent. The park states that using it obliges you to hold a prior reservation, that the reservation is subject to public fees, and that the authorisation is valid only for the day and time slot printed on it. Permitted hours of 09:00 to 17:00 coincide with cable-car operation, and the park separately sets equipment requirements when there is ice and snow on the ground, which in January is a live possibility rather than a formality.
Bookings for that trail now run through the Tenerife ON platform rather than the national parks reservation site older guides still link to. Check the current fee and the winter equipment rules there on the day you book, not on the day you fly.
The other piece of paperwork is the border. The FCDO requires a passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area, with visa-free visits capped at 90 days in any 180-day period. The EU Entry/Exit System is now operating, so a first entry may involve registering fingerprints and a photograph at a dedicated booth before the immigration desk. There is no fee and the digital record lasts three years, but the FCDO warns that it takes each passenger extra time and that checks may also happen before boarding on departure.
What to settle before paying
- Decide whether you are buying sun or scenery. The sunshine column and the interesting-landscape column do not rank these islands in the same order, and no amount of searching will merge them.
- Book a coast, not an island. On Tenerife the difference between the north and the south of one island is larger than the difference between any two islands in the table.
- Pack for 1.1 °C as well as 21.7 °C if the plan includes the high ground. The summit station is colder than the UK on a January night.
- Reserve the summit trail separately through Tenerife ON, for a named day and slot, and read the ice and snow equipment requirement before assuming a January ascent is on.
- Check the passport against its issue date, not just its expiry. The 10-year rule catches passports that are otherwise perfectly valid.
- Add border time to the first arrival. Entry/Exit registration is a new step and the FCDO says to expect it to take longer.
What this guide will not give you is a fare. January flights and packages to the Canaries move daily, by departure airport and by operator, and any number published in August would be wrong by autumn. The structural point stands without one. The islands are close enough in temperature that price and flight time can reasonably decide between them, and once they have, the sunshine and rainfall columns should decide which side of the island you sleep on. That second decision costs nothing, and it is the one that changes the week.
