If you can avoid school holidays, January is worth a look. For 2027, start with 9–16 January and compare the weeks on either side. We have picked it as a useful search date, rather than declaring it the cheapest week everywhere.
The comparisons below use published passes and resort offers. They do not include live flight, transfer or accommodation quotes, so get a complete price for your group before choosing.
Compare Val Gardena’s participating hotels first, then Tignes if high-altitude skiing matters most to you. Add Les Menuires if you want the Three Valleys. The best value depends on the room and journey as well as the pass.
Why 9–16 January is the useful week
A 2 January departure may still overlap the Christmas school break. School calendars vary, so check the dates that affect your group and resort. Moving to the following week gives you a useful comparison after New Year.
Val Gardena advertises White Weeks from 9–24 January 2027, with offers on stays and ski passes. Ask the property exactly what is included and compare the final amount with a normal booking.

The 16–23 January week is not wrong. In Tignes, however, the Mountain Shaker programme runs from 17 to 22 January. Competitions, concerts and activities may be exactly why somebody wants to go; they also remove “quietest possible ski week” from the sales pitch. We would not infer higher prices without a dated search, but we would choose 9–16 January when calm is part of the value.
Three resorts to compare
Val Gardena: the only explicit January saving
Val Gardena publishes its 2026–27 ski season from 4 December to 4 April. The 9–16 January week therefore sits well inside the operating season, not at an edge. The White Weeks dates cover both that week and the next, with reduced prices attached to participating accommodation.
The valley gives you a choice of Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva, with access to the Sellaronda. Choose accommodation for its lift access as well as its price. A promotion at a hotel outside your budget is not a saving.
Tignes: buy altitude, not a bargain lift pass
For 12 December 2026–23 April 2027, Tignes lists an adult six-day pass at €468 with a seventh day included. The child and senior rate is €378. Check the age bands and the number of days you can actually use.
Tignes is worth the extra cost if your group will make use of its high skiing and the links to Val d’Isère. Wind and poor visibility can still close lifts. Compare where you will stay and how easily you can reach the slopes.
Les Menuires: the base can save money when the pass does not
Les Menuires sells the six-day Three Valleys adult pass for €421 in the core season. The linked domain is due to operate from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, with Saint-Martin-de-Belleville opening from 12 December. By 9 January, the published calendar is comfortably past the phased opening period.
Les Menuires is worth comparing for apartments with convenient access to the slopes. The full-area pass does not become cheaper simply because it is January, so any saving has to come from the rest of the trip.

Add travel, accommodation and food before deciding. Val Gardena’s promotion has no single price for every hotel. For the French resorts, compare the same room occupancy and include the transfer from your arrival airport or station.
For each option, add:
- the journey from your actual UK starting point, including ski carriage and station parking;
- airport or rail transfers in both directions, with a private-transfer fallback if the last shared service is missed;
- seven nights on the same board basis and a realistic food allowance;
- the correct local or linked-area lift pass, equipment and lessons;
- tourist tax and card-currency costs;
- winter-sports insurance covering the activities and altitude planned.
Count how many full ski days the journey leaves you. It may be worth paying a little more for travel times that give you another day on the mountain.
Snow reliability is not the same as good skiing
January usually gives these areas a stronger base than December, but a calendar cannot guarantee surface quality or lift operation. Cold, wind, avalanche control and visibility can all narrow the day. High terrain improves the odds of snow; it can also be more exposed. Lower wooded pistes can be the better place in cloud, provided the natural or made snow reaches them.
Tignes offers high-altitude skiing, Val Gardena has a dated January promotion, and Les Menuires gives access to the Three Valleys. Choose the one that suits your skiing and your full budget.
Before you book
- Price 9–16 January before moving the dates. It is a starting point for comparing prices. Move only after the like-for-like totals are visible.
- Ask what the Val Gardena offer includes. Confirm the participating dates, property, room basis and ski-pass reduction in writing.
- Choose the pass after choosing the skiing. A local pass can be enough for lessons or a short trip. A linked pass is wasted when the group never leaves the home valley.
- Protect the expensive components. Read cancellation deadlines and exclusions. “Flexible” can still mean a voucher, a fee or a hard cut-off weeks before departure.
- Check the event calendar. In Tignes, 17–22 January has a different rhythm. Treat that as a feature or avoid it deliberately.
- Recheck operations close to departure. Use official lift reports and webcams rather than snowfall headlines. Insurance is not a substitute for accepting normal mountain variability.
