An early ski week is a bet, even at altitude. The sensible version is not “which resort opens first?” It is “which resort still gives me a worthwhile holiday when only part of the plan works?”
For 2026, Cervinia publishes the earliest winter opening of this shortlist: 24 October. Tignes and Val Thorens both publish 21 November. Those dates are useful, but they do not promise every piste, every link or every village business. Tignes describes its own November opening as progressive, with the Val d’Isère link planned from 28 November and the full Tignes–Val d’Isère winter period beginning on 12 December.
For a full week, target 12–19 December and choose Tignes. For a shorter, earlier gamble, Cervinia offers altitude and the longest published season—but wind and limited lower terrain can still spoil the clever plan.
Three credible choices, three different weaknesses
Tignes: the clearest staged opening
Tignes is the easiest recommendation to explain because the resort publishes the stages. The Tignes area is due to open progressively from 21 November; the Val d’Isère link is planned from 28 November; the full winter period starts 12 December. The official site also publishes an early-season six-day pass of €402 for 28 November–11 December, rising to €468 in the full period.
The strength is not a claim of perfect snow. It is that a high base, glacier access and a large linked area give operations more ways to assemble a skiable week. The weakness is price and atmosphere: early December can feel functional rather than festive, and a cheap apartment ceases to be cheap after transfers, food and lift passes.
Cervinia: earliest, high and exposed
Cervino Ski Paradise lists its 2026–27 winter season from 24 October to 2 May. Breuil-Cervinia’s altitude and access towards the Matterhorn make it an obvious early-season candidate. It also has gentler high runs than many resorts, which helps mixed-ability groups when the available terrain is narrower than usual.
The compromise is weather exposure. High lifts and the international connection towards Zermatt can be affected by wind. Do not price the holiday as if the full cross-border circuit is guaranteed every day. A group that will be happy on the Italian side, eating well and skiing what opens, has a better chance of enjoying the bet than one arriving with a single famous itinerary in mind.
Val Thorens: a high base, but not yet the whole Three Valleys
Val Thorens publishes 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027 for the Val Thorens–Orelle area. At the time of checking, the official page had not announced the 2026–27 dates for the wider Three Valleys. That matters. A resort can offer a strong local ski week before every connection in the wider domain is dependable, but the price comparison must be based on the terrain actually expected to open.
Choose it for a high, ski-focused base and a self-contained local area. Do not pay a Three Valleys premium in your head before the linked-area dates and pass conditions are clear.

Why 12–19 December is the useful week
This is an editorial judgement, not a snow guarantee. By 12 December, Tignes moves from its preview period to the published full-area period. It is still before the Christmas and New Year peak. The week is late enough for snowmaking, grooming and resort operations to have had more cold nights, while remaining early enough to capture some of the price and crowd advantage.
If your dates must be in November, shorten the trip. Four nights of partial terrain can feel like a lively first ski; seven nights can turn every closed connection into a grievance. Early season rewards people who are content to ski a modest open area well, then stop for lunch. It punishes itinerary collectors.
The cost trap is not the lift pass
Tignes’s published 2026–27 prices provide one rare firm comparison: six days for the price of seven is €402 in the 28 November–11 December preview period and €468 from 12 December. The €66 difference is easy to see. The expensive mistakes are elsewhere: a Saturday transfer that costs more than the flight, a room far from the open lifts, non-refundable accommodation, or six days of equipment hire when the first and last days are travel days.
Build a total for the same dates and baggage assumptions:
- flight or rail, including ski carriage;
- airport or station transfer in both directions;
- accommodation close to the lifts expected to open;
- the correct local or linked-area pass;
- equipment, lessons and realistic food costs;
- insurance that covers winter sports and the activities you plan.
How to book the gamble defensively
- Choose the acceptable minimum ski area. If the group needs the international link or whole domain, early season is the wrong way to save.
- Book accommodation with useful cancellation terms. Read the deadline, currency and exclusions rather than relying on a “flexible” badge.
- Keep the journey recoverable. A missed last shared transfer can erase the saving. Allow connection time and price the backup.
- Delay what can be delayed. Hire and some passes do not need to be bought months ahead if the discount is small.
- Check live operations, not snowfall headlines. A storm is only useful after avalanche work, grooming and lift clearance.
